The term South of France is usually used to describe the southern stretch of the country’s coastline that runs between Spain and Italy, and the rural inland areas that include Provence and the Luberon. With its warm climate, lush landscape and beautiful coastline, it is one of the most regularly-visited parts of Europe.
This is where you can get creative. There are certainly a wide range of places to stay in that you can experience the South of France. You will find everything from the top luxury hotels to the tiny guesthouses. For a true taste of the area though, stay in one of our smaller boutique hotels or if you are out in Provence, go for a bed and breakfast. These small and intimate places will cater to your needs and make you feel right at home. Your vacation will have a completely different feel to it. Good food usually goes hand-in-hand especially with the bed and breakfast or smaller boutique hotels. Go and explore the options and treat yourself to a memorable stay in the South of France.
The South of France is too big to discover in one holiday. I recommend selecting an area which you are truly interested in exploring or stay as long as possible. This is the reason many people continue going back to the South of France year after year. This area of France has something for everyone. If your interest is yachts, fashion, rich, famous, St Tropez or Cannes will offer plenty of options to rub shoulders with the who’s who. You will also enjoy many water sports activities, sailing and of course, frolicking in the beautiful beaches. The cove near Cassis called Les Calanques, between Marseille and Casis, has one of the most dramatic beaches you will find in the South of France. Provence is well known for the landscapes, vineyards and the spectacular wild flowers. One of the best guides to exploring the villages in the South of France or inland is The Most Beautiful Villages of France.
If you’re planning on exploring the South of France, you should hire a car. Driving in this area is not only beautiful but quite easy. The roads are well maintained and there are toll-controlled areas which you will pay at the marked toll stations if you choose to use them. If you plan to stay in one place mainly or close to major cities or tourist areas, then opt for the train system, operated by SNCF, and taxis.
There is so much to see and do in the South of France that everyone will find something they enjoy. The hardest part to do will be leaving this dreamy place. Happy Travels!
